Summer is picking up and Netflix season is trailing behind us as we bask in purple tinted sunny evenings. We’ve pencilled a bunch of summer cinema evenings into our diaries. Pretty much the best way to spend summer evenings, weekday or weekend, is in a supersized Netflix & chill format.
As soon as the sun rears it’s gorgeous head, this is where you need to head into your city to relish in open air cinema glory and https://www.foodora.ca/ grab something to eat (because eating is an intricate part of movie-watching). We’ve also thrown in suggestions on what to eat based on the films being screened like a super fan should.
Toronto
Yonge-Dundas Square is screening every Tuesday throughout July and August and has some awesome cult classics to see down the sun. Better still, they’re all free! Here are our faves:
July 11th – Whip it
Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut is a (potentially underrated) derby of super-indie brilliance. You will develop a newfound passion for skating and roller derby will be the only next hobby on your list. Protagonist Ellen Page holds a part-time job at the ‘Oink Joint’, a classic small town diner, serving ‘The Squealer’ which looks to consist of… a lot of pork.
Required food: Delicious, diner style pork burger. Slab Burger will soothe your lust for American burger time.
August 1st – The Great Outdoors
The 1988 classic romp depicts why nobody likes inlaws. It also introduces us to the ‘world famous, Paul Bunyan’s blue ox steak. A 96 ounce prime aged beef steak’. You’ll feel uncomfortable watching, but will also feel worse if you don’t have a steak brought to you.
Required food: 96 oz (+/-) prime aged beef steak. Get a delivery from Top Gun Steak & Burgers for serious servings.
Vancouver
Stanley Park has a similar Tuesday set up from July 4th – August 22nd, with a bunch of perfectly selected family movies and again, screened for free (leaving more dollar for dinner).
July 25th – National Lampoon’s Vacation
Summer brilliance totally depicted in style as the Griswald’s take to the road to reach a theme park. Who doesn’t love a ridiculous 80’s roadtrip movie? Remember the all-you-can-eat, $1.49 buffet scene? Reminder: “this is all you can eat… we don’t need a plate”. It’s something of a guilty pleasure to indulge in that kind of buffet, but judge away, we’re eating. One of the main features of the buffet is Spaghetti Bolognese, which probably tastes better when every night is Italian night at your chosen restaurant.
Required food: Spaghetti bolognese (non-buffet style). Try Basil Pasta Bar, which sits on Davie St
August 8th – Jaws
One of the most exciting films to watch with a crazy amount of people on a gigantic screen. We’re not suggesting you eat people, however.
Required food: Take revenge on the sea… by eating crab from The Holy Crab (Robson St).
